'Meena' is a landmark movie in a sense coz it was the debut of the director of the film Vijaya Nirmala who later on went on to make the most number of films by a woman director and feature herself in the Guinness Book of World Records. It also featured her future life spouse Superstar Krishna as the male lead in his first attempt as a 'Novel Hero'. 'Meena' completes 40 years and is remembered by followers even today.
Produced by S Ravi Kumar, S Raghunath and S Ramanath on Vijaya Krishna Movies banner, the film featured legendary actors like Gummadi, Suryakantham, Jaggayya, Chandra Kala, Chaya Devi etc. The film went on to become a huge commercial success running in 36 theaters for 50 days and 9 theaters for 100 days. It was made in a paltry Rs. 6 Lacs and grossed over Rs. 30 Lacs. Music by Ramesh Naidu was a great bonus with super hit scores like 'Pellante Nurella Panta', 'Srirama Namalu Sata Koti', 'Malleteega Vantidi' etc.
Krishna reminisced the memories of the film saying he was a mass hero then and the film gave a family / Novel hero image. He said that Vijaya Nirmala surprised everyone including ace actors like Gummadi by shooting six scenes on the first day. She even got the praise of the writer Yaddanapudi Sulochana Rani too. He added that though the film had a duration of over three hours, the screenplay had gripped the audiences.
Vijaya Nirmala said she loved Yaddanapudi's novels which were a rage in the 70's and 80's so she picked 'Meena' for the film. She had actually directed 'Kavitha' in Malayalam before. She fondly remembered how Gummadi called her 'Monster' during the shoot as a tribute to her workaholic attitude.
