Kyon Ki

Thursday, January 1, 1970 • Hindi Comments

Does love happen only once? Is there a life after your loved one's death? Can love happen in unexpected places, against unexpected odds? Can one come back to normalcy after loosing one's mental state? Is the existing medical system good enough to provide a fair share of love, care and affection?

Kyon Ki - the tale of two relationships, three lovers and a plethora of emotions is coming this Diwali to answer all these questions. This is Priyadarshan's 58th film and a remake of his Malayalam film Thalavattam[1986] starring Mohanlal, which was further inspired from the English movie 'One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest'. Earlier titled 'Rahein Na Rahein Hum', then 'Kyunki' and finally 'Kyon Ki', it was supposed to star Shah Rukh Khan while Hrithik Roshan's name too came into the picture, but finally it was Salman Khan who stepped in.

For a sensitive love story cum drama like Kyon Ki, it appears that Salman Khan is an apt choice in the role of Anand, a young and witty man. Like any other normal man of his age, he too is love with a pretty young girl called Maya [Rimii Sen]. He woos her, charms her, gets her attracted towards him and it becomes irresistible for her too to fall for him. Life seemed to be a bed of roses for them until.....

There is an accident and Maya is killed. This just wasn't the end of Anand's misery. In fact it was the beginning of it! Anand is accused of murdering Maya and worse, he looses the state of his mind. Declared as mentally unfit, he finds himself in a mental hospital.

Kyon Ki....that's FATE!

Anand's world could have completely come crashing down. But his inherent witty and charming self ensure that even in his difficult times, he sustains his sense of humor and doesn't let his shoulders sag. Because now he gangs up with his fellow inmates, has fun in the hospital, sings and dances, come up with his naughty pranks, and does every bit to make his and his inmate friends' world a much better place to live in. All this much to the displeasure of hospital head Dr. Khurana [Om Puri]!

Kyon Ki....Dr. Khurana comes from the school of thought that says that insane people can be cared only with a stick and not a flower!

Not having the best of his times in the hospital, Anand sees ray of hope in the form of two sympathizers - Dr. Tanvi Khurana [Kareena Kapoor], sweet and understanding daughter of Dr. Khurana and Dr. Sunil [Jackie Shroff] who is just the opposite of Dr. Khurana in his attitude towards the patients. Both of them work in the same hospital and support Anand in his endeavor. Meanwhile Tanvi decides that she has to get Anand back to the state of normalcy and with her good treatment he gets well too. And now Tanvi's life changes!

Kyon Ki...she has fallen in love with Anand during the course of his treatment!

If one thought that love happens only once that he/she needs to reconsider it. Because Anand too is in love again. Tanvi's care, compassion and love brings him closer to her and he too wants to live the rest of his life with her. Dr. Khurana is enraged to hear about this relationship as first of all he can't believe that a mentally unstable person could get well to this degree and secondly he had never liked Anand in the first place. In his mission to destroy Anand's life once again, he treats him to sever electrical shocks that put his miles behind the state when he was first brought to the hospital.

Kyon Ki...now he looses his inherent qualities - with and charm - and has been turned into a living corpse!

What happens next is a soul stirring journey of love and life in the troubled times! Does Tanvi ever forgive her father? Does Dr. Sunil let this inhuman act pass away without any retribution? Does Dr. Khurana even once feels guilty about his unp
