Madhurey is no Gilli
Friday, September 3, 2004 • Tamil Comments

Madhurey is music director Vidya Sagar's latest venture after the stupendous success of Gilli. The latter starred Vijay as does Madhurey. When Madhurey hit the stands, the one question everybody asked was whether this would replicate Gillie's stunning success.

The album starts off with the rather crudely titled `Machchan Peru Madhurey' (a rather literal translation would go something like  `Brother-in-law's name is Madhurey').This is one of the most peppy koothu tracks like 'Appadi Podu'. But`Machchan Peru Madhurey; is no `Appadi Podu', though the song has attracted the college crowd. Shankar Mahadevan, as expected, however, has added a lot of energy and vigor to the song.

The next song, `Pambarakkannu Pachamilakaa', belted out by Udit Narayan and Srilekha Parthasarathy, is another track in the same vein as `Machchan Peru Madhurey', but is not as entertaining as the first one.

By the time the third track draws to a close, one begins to feel whether all three sounded a bit too similar. One also begins to feel the music grate on you.

`Ice Katti, Ice Katti', which is the track that follows, is yet another track in the same vein, but slightly slower. Karthik has tried to give his lines life but it is not one of those songs that would persist in one's memory for too long.

The rest of the tracks, though sung by good singers like Anuradha Sriram, Karthik and Madhu Balakrishnan, are rather pedestrian and unimpressive. After listening to the cassette for a few times, one gets the impression that Vidyasagar was trying very hard to replicate the success of Gilli. Alas! It was not to be. Gilli is no Madhurey.

The negative aspect of Madhurey is that every song sounds the same, and all the tracks have almost the same beat, which makes it quite tedious to listen to the entire cassette at one go.

Perhaps, you can listen to one song, take a shower and listen to the next one! If you have lots of energy, you can even start dancing to its beat!
