The much awaited first meet between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Donald Trump began with Trump addressing Modi as, “A true friend”. The two leaders issued a joint press statement on what transpired during the tête-à-tête.

For a little over four hours, the two leaders discussed a range of issues, including trade, terrorism and energy. The leaders decided that a balanced approach to environment and climate was vital; the Paris climate deal was not mentioned. More importantly, there was no mention of the H1-B visas.

The two nations were determined to “destroy terrorist organisations” and on “doing away with safe shelters” for terrorists. They called on Pakistan to bring justice to perpetrators of terrorist attacks by Pakistan-based groups.

Trump hoped the trade deficit with India would reduce and welcomed trade opportunities that would provide employment to Americans. The two leaders hope to have tax reforms, energy cooperation and geopolitical strategies, among other things, that will be mutually beneficial to both nations.
