Omkara

Thursday, January 1, 1970 • Hindi Comments

If there is one universal emotion across globe, it is that of LOVE!

But what if love threatens to destroy your very existence?
What if jealousy comes in the way of love and creates mayhem all around?
What if love crosses the limit to reach the level of obsession and possessiveness?

Years back Shakespeare came with a tale about love and jealousy in OTHELLO. Vishal Bhardwaj, who is fascinated with an idea of bringing Shakespearean tales to the big screen, what with a feel of the title and character names alike as well, adapts the tale to come up with 'OMKARA'.

OMKARA has been set in contemporary India, in fact in the heartland of the country, U.P., where Omkara [Ajay Devgan] rules. Rustic, rough, tough and soft at heart when it comes to his beautiful wife Dolly [Kareena Kapoor], he knows where to pull the plug when it comes to running his gang.

In charge of a parallel organization of his own, Omkara, fondly known as Omi, had Langda Tyagi [Saif Ali Khan] and Kesu Firangi [Viveik Oberoi] on either sides of his arms. Together, the three knew how to rule their area and were pretty successful in that.

But soon there came a day when Omi had to choose between the two as his right hand man, a lieutenant, who could be assigned his responsibilities one fine day. And between a crafty Langda and dynamic Kesu he chose the latter!

Though it was a surprise to many, and quite obviously to Langda, a cold feeling started developing within Langda.

He respected Omi but struggled to judge his decision!
He was loyal to his mentor but couldn't see him being sidelined!
He showed a brave face but inside him was busy hatching a plan!

A plan that would be destructive not just for Kesu, but everyone else who was a part of the scenario!

His scheming mind starts poisoning Omi's mind about the relationship between Dolly and Kesu. A relationship that was illegitimate, crossed all boundaries and was powerful enough for Omi to turn blind in rage.

In his plan, there was one more individual who got trapped to lend a helping hand - Langda's wife Indu [Konkona Sen]!

Slowly but steadily, Landa' plan starts showing its colors. The bravest of the brave start finding them in a corner. The most intelligent of all start making wrong decisions. The most lovable of all start looking at each other with hatred!

With sexual jealousy taking over, it became increasingly impossible for Omi to start ignoring fact and fiction about Dolly and Kesu.

And there was destruction all around!

But was it an end to all? Or would there be more surprises in store? Would Omi finally realize about his actions that crossed the boundaries of rationalism?

A dark tragedy that is the culmination point for an entire drama that happens in Omkara's walk in life, 'OMKARA' also stars Naseeruddin Shah in the powerful role of 'bhaisaab'. The title itself has been a reason for speculation over last few months as the cast and crew were divided amongst themselves to choose between 'Omkara', 'Issak' and 'O Saathi Re'. Finally it was the 'viewer's choice' that close on the title 'Omkara' after a global voting! The film releases on 28th July.
