Oram Po

Thursday, January 1, 1970 • Tamil Comments

Chennai is synonymous to traffic hazard and bustling crowds. When you talk about traffic on the busy Chennai roads, none can forget the fast running three-wheelers - the auto-rickshaws.

Very few films were made featuring the hero as auto-rickshaw drivers. The only exception has been Baasha with 'Super Star' Rajinikanth playing the auto-driver.

Now it is the turn of husband and wife duo Pushkar and Gayathri to come up with a film that revolves around the life of auto drivers. Titled Oram Po, the flick features Arya and Pooja in the lead roles. Initially it was named Auto, but it was re-christened as Oram Po, obviously with the intention of getting tax exemption given for Tamil Titles.

The couple (Pushkar and Gayathri) has done a lot of home work to make the fare credible and engrossing. "We did intense research before commencing the project. We took a 15-minute documentary on the movie's concept. It came out very well. All works including script, screenplay and dialogues were made ready much before we went to shoot the movie", says the couple.

Arya deserves praise for playing the role. It was interesting to note that Arya evinced keen interest to learn to drive the vehicle. He quite easily drove the three-wheeler in the busy stretches of Chennai, says Pushkar. "Arya has emerged one of the best auto-drivers in the city today" adds the director.

Very few know that the auto-drivers compete themselves with a race during week-ends in busy roads of Chennai. The movie has one such race and it forms the crux of the movie. "The race has come out really well", Pushkar says.

Thanking Pushkar and Gayathri for giving him a challenging role, Arya says, "The movie is a different experience. I enjoyed playing every part of it. Unfortunately the movie's   release has been delayed. The hard work and dedication of the whole unit has impressed me. I am hopeful that Oram Po would emerge a movie to reckon with in my career".

Pooja says, "Unlike other movies where the heroine fades away after a couple of songs, I have a major role to play in Oram Po. I play a girl selling biriyani on the roadside. I had to perform naturally. It was a joy to work in sets of Oram Po".

Young G V Prakash has composed music for the film and all the songs have already hit the audio charts. "Both Pushkar and Gayathri have a great knowledge of music and to work with them was a delight", he observes.

Produced by A P Film Garden, Oram Po is ready to be released soon.
