'Phantom': Meet the dreaded villains

Famed writer Hussain S. Zaidi`s book Mumbai Avengers` a story that is based on the aftermath of 26 11 attacks comprising 4 key characters based on globally wanted terrorists Hafiz Saeed, David Headley, Sajid Mir and Lakhvi.

'Phantom', an action thriller, based on Zaidi`s book portrays these villainous characters.

Hafiz Muhammad Saeed

An internationally designated terrorist and the chief or amir of Jama'at-ud-Da'wah, which operates mainly from Pakistan and has had sanctions placed against it as a terrorist organisation by the United Nations. His organisation is banned as a terrorist organization by The United States, the United Kingdom, the European Union, Russia and Australia.

He is one of the masterminds responsible for 26/11 attacks in India.

The United Nations declared Jama'at-ud-Da'wah a terrorist organisation in December 2008 and Hafiz Saeed a terrorist as its leader.

In April 2012, the United States announced a bounty of $10 million on Hafiz Saeed, for his alleged role in the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks.

David Coleman Headley

An American terrorist of Pakistani origin, and a spy who conspired with the Lashkar-e-Taiba Islamist organization and Pakistani intelligence officers in plotting the 2008 Mumbai attacks. Under the direction of Lashkar chiefs, Headley performed five spying missions in Mumbai to scout targets for the attacks, which killed 168 people.

At the trial of Tahawwur Hussain Rana, an alleged co-conspirator, Headley gave detailed information about the participation of Pakistan's Directorate of Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) in carrying out the attacks. Since his arrest and guilty plea, Headley has cooperated with U.S. and Indian authorities and given information about his associates. On January 24, 2013, a U.S. federal court sentenced Headley to 35 years in prison for his role in the Mumbai attacks.

Sajid Mir who allegedly was Headley`s handler, has vanished and is said to be in Lahore.

Zaki-ur-Rehman Lakhvi

The other mastermind, is also living around in Lahore. He is a top leader of a terrorist organisation Lashkar-e-Taiba and currently serves as Supreme Commander of operations in Kashmir and as a member of LeT's General Council. He is listed on the NIA Most Wanted list.

On December 3, 2008 Indian officials named him as one of four possible major planners behind the November 2008 Mumbai Attacks.He reportedly offered to pay the family of Ajmal Kasab the sum of Rs.150,000 for his participation in the attacks.

Pakistan confirmed the arrest but refused to hand over any of its citizens to Indian authorities. Officials stated that any Pakistani citizen accused of involvement in the attack would be tried in Pakistan.

Lakhvi was released from jail on bail on April 10, 2015.
