Prajapathi

Thursday, January 1, 1970 • Malayalam Comments

During his honeymoon with film making in the late 90's, Renjith has penned half a dozen scripts for Mammootty. Eventhough every one carried substance many of his films like Johnnywalker, Neelagiri and its prototypes couldn't become big hits. Later Renjith changed camps and associated with Mohanlal in 'Devasuram'. What followed was a different story.

In a matter of few years he became the most sought after scriptwriter in Malayalam with mega hits like Aaramthampuran and Narasimham. Even his debut as director with 'Ravanaprabhu' was a landmark success. Later he again planned one with Mammootty with this renewed spirits and in came 'Black'  another instant success. Now in 'Prajapathi' Renjith is again with Mammootty all set for another remakable success, with a not so usual story lines.

As every other Renjith scripts, Prajapathi also clings to the magnanimity of heroes, but in this in a different manner . The film is the story of  a village with a difference -.Perumalpuram. It has no hotels, no political parties, no flag poles, no slogans, no police stations, and no alcohol. The folks there abide by a set of rules. Those who flout the rules are thrown out of the village. At the heart of the village is Devarmattom where lives the protogonist, Devarmattom Narayanan, (played by Mammooty) a noble demigod, who is the ultimate  authority in the village and whose word is the deciding law. Though he commands the respect of the entire village, Narayanan is a simple man who has the good of the people in mind. He lost both his parents when he was still a child. Even though he holds some mysteries about his recent past, his entire life has been a fight for truth and justice. He is evenly supported in all his endeavors by a group composing of Kattia and Vellody master.

Another village near by, Chittoor  Kaaliyaar, is the very opposite of everything that Perumalpuram imbibes. At the centre of the village is Kaaliyaarmattom with Mooppil Kunjambu Nair (played by Nedumudi Venu), an uncle and sworn enemy of Narayanan as the patriarch. He was running for riches, through wickedness all through his life. He and his four unrighteous  sons has always been in the march for destruction of their neighboring village and its leader ,Narayanan. The kaaliyar madam has attempted many times to create problem for Devarmadam, but with his sheer finesse of truthfullness and will, Narayanan was able to move past the obstacles. Everything was going fine, until Aali raaghavan, the man with something of anxiety, arrived in the village at a crucial play of fates. What is his mission?  Prajapathi tells the story of the rivalry between these two families. It also tells the love of Savithry, who is left in a hard situation to select between two of his cousins, Narayanan and Giri, one of the sons of Moopil Kunjambu Nair.

The film has Mammootty in the lead role with Kannada actress Adithi Rao, playing Saavithri. Seema plays Indraaniyamma , wife of Moopil Kunjambu Nair. The film boasts of a heavy  cast including Siddique, Sreenivasan, Thilakan, T.G.Ravi, Anil Murali, Manjulan,Saikumar and Sandhya. Renjith who directs the film has also written the story.
