Raja Natwarlal Movie Review - Strictly for Emraan Hashmi's fans

IndiaGlitz  [Friday, August 29, 2014]

What is it all about?

Boasting the dependable Emraan Hashmi UTV Motion Pictures’Raja Natwarlal’ is able to ‘con’ Hashmi’s die hards but for rest it’s a diminishing unexciting con drama that wastes the given opportunity.

The Story

Parveez Sheikh writes a lazy insipid con drama where a pretty crook Raja Natwarlal (Emran Hashmi) cons people to meet his bar dancer girlfriend Ziya (Humaima Malik) at night. He and his mentor Raghav (Deepak Tijori) plan a heist of Rs 80 lakh. Unknowingly they con a cricket crazy Don Vardha Yadav (Kay Kay Menon). Vardha replies back forcing Raja to take on Vardha with the help of an ex-con guru Yogi (Paresh Rawal) and his chelas (team).

Lacking innovation and intelligence the screenplay is too simplistic and convenient that makes us wonder what’s so special about Raja that makes him a con man and why is he coning people anyway. The plot is easy and lacks the challenge and the required twist and turns. Ironically instead of making the audience guessing it turns predictable.

What to look out for

Kunal Deshmukh as the director is steady in the first half though there’s a feeling of déjà vu from his previous films Kunal manages to maintain the interest in the first half even though he is handicapped by an uninspiring script.

Emraan Hashmi is completely arresting right from the first frame till the last. The pre climax and the climax bring the best from him. Emraan Hashmi is perfectly cookie as demanded by the character. Simply superb.

Deepak Tijori as his mentor is fine. K K Menon as Varda Yadav is menacing. Paresh Rawal is superb. Sumeet Nijhawan as the greedy cop is fantastic.

What not

It’s a lazy attempt. Director Kunal is able to cover his writer Parveez Sheikh’s incompetency in the first half but later he too falls short of ideas as the script doesn,t offer much con thrill moments.

Lacking the excitement, forget about the excellence witnessed in Special Chabbis, Oye Lucky Oye. Raja Natwarlal even lacks the basic thrills seen in above average B-town con flicks like ‘Bunty aur Babli’, ‘Bluff Master’.

Music by Yuvan Shankar Raja is a letdown. Rarely do we see music of an Emraan Hashmi starrer not up to the required mark.

Pakistani actress Humaima Malik is nothing but just a prop.

Conclusion: 'Raja Natwarlal' is serially kissing for die hard Emraan Hashmi’s lovers otherwise it can be easily exchanged for fresh doughnuts.
