Rama Shama Bhama

Thursday, January 1, 1970 • Kannada Comments

Rama Shama Bhama is a comedy entertainer and it marks the re-entry of Kamal Hassan into Kannada Cinema after a gap of nearly two decades. In the film Kamalji plays a simple-minded gynecologist who gets his friend Ramesh Arvind in and out of deep trouble.

Kamalji plays Shama while Ramesh is Rama. Contrary to their names Shama is a devoted husband while Rama is a flirt. The story is about a happily married man Rama (Ramesh Arvind) meeting a beautiful girl Priya (Daisy Boppanna) and carrying on an affair with her lying to her about his marital status. Rama's wife Bhama (Oorvashi) is unaware of the romantic escapades of her husband. Hiding from Bhama's eyes the philanderer husband takes Priya to Goa on a secret pleasure trip. Enter his old friend Sham Sajjan (Kamalji) in the flight. The pleasure trip turns into a torture with the intruding friend, his illiterate wife Shanti (Shruthi) and their brat son. Back to Bangalore Rama manages quite well to keep his wife and mistress unknown to each other, enjoying the best of both worlds. The "hit and miss" kind of episodes and the "great escapes" follow. But one day, the cat is out of the bag and the wife comes to know the escapades of her husband. All hell breaks loose. The hurt wife takes Shama's help to get her husband back playing all kinds of tricks. Hilarious episodes of sweet torture to the lovebirds make the husband realize the true value of matrimony and come back home.

The entire film is a laugh a minute kind of entertainer. Kamal is rendering the dialogue in North Karnataka (Hubli) accent.

Being the debut directorial venture of Ramesh Arvind, and with a great star like Kamal Hassan, "Rama Shama Bhama" is one of the most eagerly awaited films of the year in Karnataka.
