Journeys have the power to transform. Stories that bring about a transformation are thrilling to say the least. The way such stories are presented on screen needs to be carefully handled. There should be a good background setting for the characters to decide to take this journey, a deep characterization, self- realization and transformation. And 'Rani Padmini' has all these in good measure!

The plot unravels through the life of two women - Padmini and Rani. The nuances of their lives are depicted and the first half places them in their context. This part of the movie might seem a bit long and certain parts unnecessary. But as the second half rolls, all those sequences assume importance and the movie takes on a different trajectory.

The Himalayan journey in the second half takes the movie to an altogether new level. The breathtaking scenery is deftly captured. Camera work is great here. The transformation that the characters experience is something that is palpable. Rani's rebellious streak, her loneliness, the roughness in her demeneour and Padmini's yearning for some care, which she does not receive from her husband or mother-in-law are all changing.

Director Aashiq Abu has tried to narrate the idea of freedom very beautifully. This is not didactic or preachy in any way though there are moments of cliches towards the end. Humour is aplenty and blends in with the narrative very naturally. Script by Shyam Pushkaran and Ravi Shankar has really given us a good movie.

Rima Kallingal has emoted Rani with elan. Her mannerisms suit the character to the tee. Manju's energy as the journey unravels is heartening. The supporting cast too stand out. Music by Madhu Neelakandhan is apt. Aashiq Abu has delivered big time with this movie.
