A RGV movie with Big B as a lead protagonist is undoubtedly an audience delight and that's the drama that unfolds in this week's mega-release 'Sarkar'. If there was one word to sum up the theme of 'Sarkar', it would be 'POWER'. From day one of the beginning of promos of this mega-venture, one message has been consistently delivered to people coming to watch the movie. And the message is that 'Sarkar' is all about the power of a single entity who is a self made man. Who believes in doing what he WANTS to do ! Who believes in doing WHAT is RIGHT! Who believes in CHALLENGING anyone who confronts him on his belief ! Even if the one throwing up a challenge is GOD !
A K Sera Sera presentation, 'Sarkar' is a Factory product, which is a dream come true for its maker Ram Gopal Verma who holds the director's baton once again after 'Naach' last Diwali. With 'Sarkar', he gets into a full fledged starry affair by getting both Big B and Chota B come together to ignite the screen. The maker who believes in using stars only if the script demands, RGV also ropes in talented actor Kay Kay (who should be having his second release in three weeks after 'Silsiilay', supermodel Katrina Kaif, Rukhsar (recently seen as D's lady love in 'D'), Tanisha amongst other Factory regulars. A movie that promises to be a gripping drama about a family that holds a strong position in the political world, underworld and the outside world, 'Sarkar' is touted to be a landmark film in the illustrious career of Big B that is shining again in 2005 after the continued successes of 'Black', 'Waqt' and 'Bunty Aur Babli.
Comparisons with Hollywood classic 'Godfather' are inevitable as this was clearly the source of RGV (as admitted by him) when he began filming 'Sarkar'. A movie about a patriarch [played by Amitabh Bachchan] and his wife [Supriya Pathak] who have two sons [played by Kay Kay and Abhishek Bachchan], 'Sarkar' promises to be a gripping saga about no absolute 'rights' or 'wrongs' in this world. An array of promos on screen for last couple of months give a clear indication of the mood of the movie hence making it clear that this is not going to be one of those 'run of the mill' underworld sagas. In fact, 'Sarkar' has a more political, social and family appearance than anything else and as in RGV's own tongue in cheek confession, this is his first bonafide 'Family Film'. Knowing RGV's brand of film making (you may excuse an odd 'Naach'), one is sure that 'Sarkar' too is poised to be another hard-hitting socio-political statement.
Coming to performances, it would be highly disappointing not to see sparks flying on the screen when real life father-son 'jodi' come together on a single frame. Though they were seen together last in Bunty Aur Babli, none of them were required to display any extraordinary histrionics due to a feel-good theme. But here, with a subject like this, it would be indeed a spellbinding experience to witness the confrontation. And if one has to go by RGV's declaration of Abhishek being a better actor than his father, there has to be 'something' IN there that would have made him say these golden words. Another performance that should be worth watching is from Kay Kay who is being terribly ignored over the years. The man was excellent in his earlier movies like 'Paanch' (that may soon get released), 'Chhal' and 'Deewar'. 'Sarkar' could be one solid platform for him to leave a lasting impression. RGV's regular character artistes from his earlier films like 'Satya', 'Company', 'Ek Hasina Thi', 'Ab Tak Chappan', 'Vaastushastra' etc. should make it possible for an audience to relate to the characters instantly.
