The Supreme Court today stayed criminal contempt proceedings against author Arundhati Roy, which was being heard by the Nagpur bench of the high court. The Bombay High Court had issued a criminal contempt notice against the writer-activist for her article supporting former Delhi University professor GN Saibaba and criticizing the Bombay court`s rejection of the latter`s bail plea.

The article, which appeared in the Outlook magazine, was criticized as "interference with the administration of justice" by advocate Bhandarkar. The former professor was arrested in 2014 for alleged links to Maoists and has been give life imprisonment under the Unlawful Prevention of Atrocities Act (UAPA) in March this year.
