Superhit Directors missing in action
In the new millennium, there have been quite an amazing number of new age directors who have made their marks emphatically in Tamil cinema. Here we take a look at some of those talented men and women who have delivered commendable work but have since then not come out with their next films.
Balaji Sakthivel
Balaji Sakthivel maybe from the Shankar school of cinema, but he has carved a niche for himself as a quality and intense filmmaker who gave us the brilliant ÂKadhalÂ. His last highly acclaimed film ÂVazhakku Earn 18/9Â released in the year 2012 and he has been missing in action for the past five long years. We surely want him to be back.
C S Amudhan
His ÂTamizh Padam went on to take on and emerge the winner against no less a force than ThalaÂs ÂAsalÂ. The film one of the first ever out and out spoof on Tamil Cinema still remains a ROFL affair but the director C. S. Amudhan has unfortunately not come out with his follow up for the past seven long years. We sure could do with a spoof now after the overdoses of horrors and thrillers.
Shantha Kumar
His ÂMouna Guru has been lauded as one of the best screenplays ever and the film has become a cult classic, but six years later we still have not come across any authentic film announcement from the highly talented Shantha Kumar. Cheers to a rocking follow up soon.
Deepan Chakravarthy
Pizza 2 Villa produced by Thirukumaran Entertainment is no less intriguing than the Karthick Subbaraj original. Though critics and cinema lovers gave the thumbs up for Deepan ChakravathiÂs deft writing and direction he has not returned with a follow up for the past 4 years.
Naveen
ÂMoodar Koodam is considered a cult classic and the films multilayered screenplay is one that should be taught in film schools. Naveen however, has not followed it up with a directorial even though his long due production venture ÂKolanji is awaiting release. What's cooking Naveen?
Ashwin Saravanan
More than half a dozen women centric films are under production this year and many more to follow in the future. The film that gave a major thrust for this trend was ÂMaya that centered around Nayanthara and became a 50 Crore movie at the box office. Though it's only been about one and a half years we still would love to hear what the talented director is up to.
Kiruthika Udayanidhi
Her ÂVanakkam Chennai was a decent breezy romcom that won the audiences for its different take on a love triangle and Kiruthika Udayanidhi in spite of her production house background has not returned to take the director's chair again. Hope Udayanidhi Stalin is listening.
R S Prasanna
The conservative Tamil cinema directors have seldom crossed the line when it comes to tackling a touchy issue and that is just what R. S. Prasanna did in this delightfully entertaining film about coping with impotence. We are waiting for PrasannaÂs rare brand of films. What say.
Vikram Sugumaran
ÂMadha Yaanai Koottam is, one can say, an unsung film which should have received better than what it eventually did. Director Vikram Sugumaran who boldly tackled casteism has not announced his second film yet.
Nelson Venkatesan
The anthology ÂOru Naal Koothu had marriage as the central theme from a strictly womenÂs point of view and delighted the audiences with its natural and entertaining storytelling. Nelson Venkatesan proved that he had a telling grip on his film and we all are surely curious as to what he is coming up with in his next.
Vijay Kumar
Young Vijay Kumar has produced, directed and starred as hero in ÂUriyadi which is one of the best films in Tamil cinema in recent times and though acknowledged by the industry, critics and the public it sadly did not make it all that big at the box office. It would be nice if Vijay Kumar does not allow a long gap for his next as he must cash in on his reputation.
