Appealing and appetizing
Tuesday, September 14, 2004 • Telugu Comments

Sye, those who have seen the promos and rushes say, is a gritty, modern, youthful subject. You can also say that without even seeing the movie --- if you have heard the audio of the film, that is.

Keeravani seems to have given Sye just the right kind of canvas for the director and others  to give a free play to their ideas and thoughts. The songs leave you in no about what kind of film that Sye is. Though the over all tenor of the songs are rhythmic and techno-jazz, Keeravani has managed to infuse his own brand of melody. And that is his essential success.

1.Nalla Nallani
When in doubt, play Chitra. This is the credo of all music directors. The veteran never lets own any song or director. And if you listen to Nalla Nallani, you will understand why. Chitra's, honey-spread voice completely takes over the song. Keeravani's backing too is timely and appropriate. The lilt stays with you long after the song is over.

2.Chantaina Bujjaina
This song is slightly reminiscent of a old Hindi hit. Yet, it holds your attention with the three singers Kalayani Malik, Smitha and Vasundhara Das giving it some throaty vocalization. The peppy number will make you lose the indolence in the body. At high ranges, the singers just let themselves run free and the result is some good fun and frolic.

3.Appudappudu
Lucky Ali as a singer is good. But he has severe limitations. He can do justice only to songs that are within his ambit. Appudappudu luckily is. Ali and Sumangali combine with lot of verve and create an appealing and appetizing spread that is effective and rambunctious.

4.Ganga AC
This is straight out for the front-bencers. Kalyani Malik, Vasundhra and Ganga (a strange combination) give their best. But the lyrics are plain ordinary and the orchestration is just about adequate.

5.Gutlo Vundi
Another mass song this. Malathi and Tippu, both known for their open and brash styles, are in the least inhibited. Like a river in spate, they unspool in rapid torrents. The effect is sometimes bewildering.

6.Pantham
This is a superb song though the combination of singers can leave you a bit tizzy ---Chandrabose, Devi Sri Prasad, Kalyani Maalik, Keeravani M M, Smitha, Tippu. This number is more than adequate to round off a satisfying album.

Rugby, which forms a important background for this film, is a strange game. But for the aficionados it is immensely satisfying. And so it is with this album.

Once you get the hang of it, it is very appealing.
