Though rains dampened the spirit of moviegoers in most parts of Tamil Nadu during Diwali, some of the festival releases are doing well.

The films released before Diwali are also doing well thanks to the Tamil Nadu chief minister's drive against video piracy.

These are the top five movies:

1. "Attahasam" (Director: Saran): Finally, it seems the bad patch in Ajit's career is over. This movie had a very good opening all over the state and people are having a lot of fun thanks to the double entendres that have become a part of Tamil films now. Ajit badly needed a hit and Saran has delivered him that, though the film is old wine in new bottle. What has worked in the film's favor is comedy and not action.

2. "Manmadan" (Director: A.J. Murugan): The director is not getting the credit for the more-than-average success of the film. It is Silambarasan, the actor and storywriter, who is getting all the credit. The film is not a smashing hit but it will give a much-needed boost to Silambarasan's career, which was not looking up till now.

3. "Niranja Manasu" (Director: Samudrakani): This Vijayakanth film has not been a hit with the urban audience but has been lapped by the rural Tamil Nadu warmly. The success of the film in the B and C centres will help Vijayakanth's political ambitions immensely.

4. "7-G Rainbow Colony" (Director: Selvaraghavan): This film is in the fourth position not because it is slipping at the box office. New Diwali films naturally have an edge over old releases. But this Selvaraghavan film is expected to have a long and steady run at the box office.

5. "M. Kumaran, son of Mahalakshmy" (Director: 'Jeyam' Raja): This film too slipped to the number five position not because people are not watching the film. It is only because new films are released and that too for a festival like Diwali.

Like "7-G Rainbow Colony", this is also a film that is expected to run for several weeks. These are the two recent big successes in recent times.
