Tourists throng Maho beach in the Caribbean island of St. Maarten just to experience the thrill of a jet blast: a chainlink fence is all that divides the beach from an active runway at the Princess Juliana international airport.

A 57-year-old New Zealand woman recently died from the jet blast as she was propelled backwards, hitting her head on the concrete. She was rushed to a hospital and later declared dead.

Police regularly patrol the area and warn tourists to keep a safe distance from this dangerous zone. Innumerable signs have also been put up. Yet, tourists can be seen posing for photos with jets in the background.

This is the first reported death from this area, although people have been injured on several other counts.
