Vatican finance chief Cardinal George Pell is in Sydney, Australia, as he appear in court later this month to face historical child sex abuse charges.
The 76-year-old will face a preliminary hearing in a Melbourne court on July 26 in connection with multiple sexual assault charges that were allegedly committed when he was a senior cleric in Australia decades ago.
The former Melbourne archbishop said that he was innocent of these charges and was waiting to prove it in court, although he said in an earlier interview that he “mucked up” in some cases of paedophile priests in the 1970s.
He has been granted a leave of absence by Pope Francis.
