Just a few seasons ago, director Vinayan could do nothing wrong. But after seeing Vellinakshatram, you will wonder where that Vinayan is.

The film is supposed to be a horror-comedy. But in reality it falls flatly between the two stools. At the end, you realize Vinayan's strength is sentiments and human drama and not graphics-enhanced stupid super natural kitsch.

The movie is about Ammukutty (Tharuni), a girl with royal lineage and an intuitive power to understand super natural things. Her father Vinod (Prithviraj), a widower, who is skeptical of the whole thing. Yet, others around him are convinced that Ammukutty is special and force Vinod to appoint a caretaker for Ammukuuty. The arrival of the caretaker Indu (Meenakshi) complicates the situation. Re-incarnations and revenge become the theme.

What follows is absolute mashed up stupidity as in the name of fun and hilarity anything goes. Comedians Jagathy, Jagadish, Salim Kumar get on to your nerves while Prithviraj and Meenakshi just about flit in the film. They are hardly comfortable in roles that the director presumably created when he was half-asleep. Karthika as Prithvi's first wife is okay while Jayasurya, in a guest role, is ephemeral.

The music is by Jayachandran is nothing to write home about.

Vinayan is hardly present in the film ---like a super natural being he becomes invisible.
