Why Royalty to Singers - Velu

IndiaGlitz [Friday, August 30, 2013]

There is no need for royalty to playback singers and the new Copyright Act does not permit. The veteran singer in a recent meeting asking for royalty is not fair. They have been paid hefty amount at the time of singing. The question of paying royalty to singers does not arise says Lahari Recording Company one of the directors G Thulsiram Naidu alias Lahari Velu reacting to a question from the media at the audio release of 'Aatmasaakshi' on Thursday evening at Green House restaurant.

Indian Singers Rights Association (ISRA) announced to keep a check on money on behalf of vocalists and musicians in last June and Chennai chapter was also evolved a few days back. This claim goes with effect from playing of any song recorded from 1963. This has come in to force through Copyright (Amended) Act of June 2012. For the claim the singers should be members of ISRA for royalty.  For any song that is played on TV, Radio or digital platforms for commercial purpose royalty has to be paid. ISRA new ruling comes in to effect from September 5 2013.

10 lakhs songs will be in data base and Rs.10 per time is the royalty for the singers. Out of Rs.10 it is 15 percent to ISRA and rest to vocalists and musicians.

'This is the not to fight and take others royalty, we are utilizing our right' observes noted playback singer Dr SP Balasubramaniam.

Lahari Velu knowing the demand placed by the senior singers says the royalty is possible when singers do not claim remuneration for their songs. In the midst of piracy and other problems faced by the Audio industry all over the country such demands was unexpected he says.

Pointing to the Radio Channels not airing the Kannada songs Lahari Velu questioned the veteran singer like Dr SPB as to why he is keeping quiet without giving a statement. He is considered as Kannada singer. Such support to give primacy to Kannada in radio channels should come from senior signers he felt. Lahari Velu emphasized that the benefit of royalty should reach the audio houses.

The case filed against Radio Channels in Karnataka for not giving prominence to Kannada songs is still in progress and law will take its action adds Lahari Velu.
