A function organized by 'Saranalayam', a voluntary organization floated by actor Karthik, ended abruptly on Madurai on Sunday night as many volunteers tried to get closer to the star resulting in a near stampede and police made a lathicharge to bring the situation under control.

Police said the stage where the actor was to distribute welfare assistance was already crowded and when he came on to it and began to speak, a lot of his fans tried to get closer and the situation went out of control due to a near stampede.

Karthik however did not make any political statement and cut short his speech.

At least 10 people were injured, said a member of the organization.

Karthik said South Tamil Nadu people were known for their bravery, shrewdness, justice and fair play and wanted his fans to be disciplined.
