So what is stopping Kollywood actors from coming together for a multi-starrer movie?

First could be the mind-set of the stars. Unlike other woods Kollywood stars prefer to live insulated in their personal and professional lives and as a result they misread their own confidence. So there is an underlying feeling the other actor may out do them with their acts.

Secondly it is not easy to develop a challenging script would provide equal opportunities for two great actors.

Thirdly the fan worries. Our fans put their stars at celestial levels and want them to take all the cake in a film. We have enough stories of fans fighting and even some fights culminated in murders. Older generation would tell you a story of a MGR fan throwing a knife at the screen to help MGR when he lost his knife in a fight with Nambiar.

Having said all we also acknowledge the present generation stars are not so averse to multi-starrer. Actors like Madhavan and Arya openly talks about their interest in doing multi-starrers. Even here many like their seniors most of the present hot shots have done multi-starrers in their starting days.

Ilaya Thalapathi Vijay and Thala Ajith Kumar were the first choice of director Vasanth for ‘Nerukku Ner’. Then Suriya replaced Ajith thereby making his debut. The same combo worked later in ‘Friends’.

Similarly, Amitabh Bachchan’s home production ‘Ullasam’ had Ajith Kumar and Vikram together. Director Bala roped in Vikram and Suriya together for his ‘Pithamagan’. And now, the same director has brought together Arya and Vishal for his upcoming film ‘Avan Ivan’. Arya’s debut film ‘Ullam Ketkume’ with Shaam or ‘Pattiyal’ with Bharath became multi starrers when the films go released. Remember ‘Kallori Vasal’ which had Prashanth and Ajith. In 1995 ‘Rajavin Parvaiyile’ had what will look a dream casting today. That was the only film of Ajith and Vijay together.

Few years ago Kamal Haasan and Arjun starred together in ‘Kuruthipunal’. Recently Kamal repeated his confidence by starring with Mohanlal in ‘Unnaipol Oruvan’. Even ‘Thalapathy’ can be called a multi-starrer with Rajini and Mammootty in one film.

But a thumping multi-starrer like Kamal-Rajini, Ajith-Vijay-Vikram or Simbu-Dhanush-Jeeva is still a dream.

So what are the advantages?

The audience will be treated to a new ‘can’t miss kind’ of entertainment. The story will be driving the film and a mui-starre with a good story line will be remembered for longer than usual.

Look at the excited economics of a multi-starrer film. All their fans will be drawn to the theatres and almost all films will be a minimum guarantee. Imagine the impact a big movie with multi-star cast can create at the box office in the first week.

So... what is that one should do?

Create a mind-blowing script which has ample scope for all the stars to perform. Influential directors like Mani Ratnam, Shankar, Bala, K, Balachander do films with more than one star there by breaking the nervousness prevailing among the stars fraternity. Once they break the ice the trend will prevail. Let stars ride on their talent and not on the rivalry wave. Impress them to keep their insecurities aside and wake up to the advantages of multi-starrers.

To begin with, they can try and recreate some yester year multi-starrer movies so that people who knew the story already will accept the reality presented on screen. A few films like that will make fans come with open minds to theatres. More films will perpetually remain on top of minds.

As we write this we hear Cloud 9 movies is planning a multi-starrer movie. We hope the big production house restart the healthy trend and treat us to a different form of entertainment. Let all the thinking actors increase their following. After all the more stars the merrier we are!

Now readers of IndiaGlitz tell us which golden era multi-starrer films can be remade now and who are the big stars you would want to star in them?

Tell us if the yester year blockbuster ‘Neeya’ starring Kamal Haasan and a host of other popular stars of that time was to be remade today who all would make it as interesting as it was then?
