1971

While in Hollywood, war movies are made on a regular basis, when it comes to Indian cinema, there are hardly any film makers who venture into making a film based on war theme. J. P. Dutta was a regular once upon a time before 'LOC - Kargil' bombed and he went on to make 'Umrao Jaan'. Apart from him, one can hardly recollect any other major film maker attempting a war movie. With '1971', STUDIO 18 and director Amrit Sagar plunge into this genre by roping in talented actors like Manoj Bajpai, Ravi Kishan, Deepak Dobriyal [last seen as Saif Ali Khan's buddy in 'Omkara'] and others.

What is is the film about?

Year: 1971
6 Indian POWs in Pakistani camp decided to make an escape to reach the Indian border. The odds were certainly against them but each of them had a mission, purpose and an aim to achieve the impossible. And what followed from here on was a saga of bravery, courage, patriotism and sacrifice that has never been told before on celluloid.

Meet the 6 POWs

Major Suraj Singh (Manoj Bajpai)

The senior most of all the POWs, Major Suraj Singh hails from 18 Rajputana Rifles and was imprisoned at Kot Lakhpat jail in Lahore. He was captured on 12th December, 1971 in Uri sector since he ran out if ammunition but he was not the one who would take it all lying down. Even in adverse circumstances, the spirit in him hadn't died down and he had made two escape attempts so far.

Reason? He didn't need an escape just for himself. Instead he was doing it all so that he could enable his brothers-in-arms to be back with their near and dear ones. Meanwhile he ensured that the men along with him didn't loose hopes too and stay on to be the true soldiers by remembering their army manners. Whether it was disciplining them or taking care of their entertainment - Major Suraj Singh did it all.

Captain Jacob (Ravi Kishan)

An explosive and topography expert, Captain Jacob was a romantic at heart who met his to-be-wife in a cinema hall and had fallen in love with her there and then. Hailing from Cochin, he dreamt of being back with his wife of 2 years who was waiting for him to come back alive one day.

Subedar Ahmed (Chitaranjan Giri)

Subedar Ahmed had a lot of responsibilities running on his shoulders in his personal life. He had aged parents to take care of, he was the only son in the family and moreover he had a 3 month pregnant wife back home. Hailing from Mushirabad, he was one of the POWs and was now taking caring of his superiors.

Captain Kabir (Kumud Mishro)

Belonging to Major Suraj Singh's regiment, he was Major's most trusted officer. On the other hand he too respected his senior with utmost regard. Shy by nature, he was a married man with a 11 year old daughter. His dream was to walk around the streets of Pune, the place he belonged to, with his family one day.

Flight Lt. Ram (Manav Kaul) and Flight Lt. Gurtu (Deepak Dobriyal)

Second generation air force officers, Flight Lt. Ram and Flight Lt. Gurtu were the youngest of the lot and planned to get married soon to the women of their dreams. Thick as pals, they had met in their training days and instantly clicked with each other. Hailing from Delhi and Srinagar respectively, they were caught by the enemy and imprisoned in the Multan Jain. Even here, they never fell shy of cracking jokes and keeping everyone in high spirits.

Come; let's join the journey of these 6 POWs who come together in this thrilling and emotional adventure called '1971'. Coming alive on celluloid soon, the film has music by Akash Sagar with Shyam Kaushal promising breathtaking action.
