The year 2014 may go down in the history of Indian Cinema as a year that witnessed the revival of the Golden Era of Indian Cinema, when cinema was used as a medium for social message and other purposeful means laced in the grab of commercial elements of song, dance, humor and of course the adorable stars. Remember movies like PYASAA, AWARA, DO BIGHA ZAMEEN, GUIDE, MOTHER INDIA, GANGA JUMNA etc.
Raaga.Com picks top 5 films of Bollywood that brilliantly merged commercial and art cinema in the year 2014.
Rajkumar Hirani and Aamir Khan's PK tops the list. The movie beautifully exposes the hypocrisies and prejudices related to religion and powerfully bring home the message that compels viewers to ponder. Despite a serious subject the movie has overtaken Salman Khan's KICK and Shah Rukh Khan's HAPPY NEW YEAR by collecting more than Rs 300 crore.
The second slot goes to Kangana Ranaut's QUEEN. The movie turned out to be a surprise hit of the years. The story of a timid girl -next -door, who embarks alone on her honeymoon to Paris and Amsterdam after her fiancé calls off their wedding, was highly acclaimed for its motivational theme. Made on a small budget of Rs.25 crore, the film collected a whopping Rs.55 crore in India and became a huge hit.
The movie that occupies third slot is Priyanka Chopra's MARY KOM. The inspirational and motivational tale of the Manipuri boxing champion and Olympic medal winner Mary Kom, who takes up the profession for passion won the hearts of the cine buffs. Made on a shoe string budget, with only Priyanka Chopra to boost as star in the film, the movie collected Rs.54 crore.
Rani Mukerji-starrer MARDAANI, win the fourth position. The movie exceptionally exposed the grave issue of human trafficking in an entertaining and somber style. Made on a budget of around Rs. 30 crore, the film garnered Rs.40 crore at the box office and was widely appreciated for spreading awareness about crime against woman, especially juvenile girls.
Aliya Bhatt, the sensational actress who made a mediocre debut in 2012 with STUDENT OF THE YEAR, stunned her critics with her mature performance in Imtiaz Ali's directorial movie HIGHWAY. The unconventional kidnapping saga of a rich man's daughter exploring a new life on her journey with her golden hearted kidnapper Randeep Hooda, was real treat. The movie registered Rs 30 crore at the box office which was quite much than its low investment.
The other movies which deserve mention for exploring creativity with commercial element include HAIDER, DEDH ISHQIYA, HASEE TOH PHASEE, FILMISTAAN, CITY LIGHTS, HUMPTY SHARMA KI DULHANIA, BHOOTHNATH RETURNS, HAWAA HAWAAI, MANJUNATH, KHOOBSURAT and UGLY
