Tamil cinema has always had the right mix of commercial cinema and meaningful ones over the years which in the new millenium tilted more towards entertainment and big bucks etravanganzas.  It was Venkat Prabhu's 'Chennai 600028' released in 2007 that succeeded in spite of breaking away from the conventional style of story telling and others followed.  Soon C.V.Kumar and others opened the gates for new thinking and young blood which resulted in the emergence of the Balaji Mohans, Karthick Subbaraj and Nalan Kumaraswamys.

The last couple of years too we had the likes of 'Kaaka Muttai', 'Visaranai', 'Joker' and other flicks that amazed with their content.  2017 is a red letter year in the calendar of Tamil cinema as one could come up with a list of films that have focussed on telling strong messages and engaged apart from entertaining.  Each year you have to be contented with comparing commercial hits but only this year one can debate about 'Vikram Vedha', 'Maanagaram', 'Kurangu Bommai', 'Theeran Adhigaram Ondru', 'Aramm' or 'Aruvi' and a lot more that have not been mentioned year. Now Gautham Menon, Sashikanth and S.R. Prabhu among others have started grooming youngsters with a vision. The most heartening part is the people have responded and have started patronising good cinema and have started rejecting farcical so called no brainer entertainers.  Isnt it proof enough that 2017 is the year when the true blue movie buff and the lover of meaningful cinema is on equal grounds which light up the possiblities of many more to come in 2018.  Happy New Year.
