Mumbai: A 26-year-old woman from Govandi lost her life on Saturday night after having succumbed to a double infection of H1N1 and leptospirosis. Danishta Idrees Khan passed away at KEM Hospital’s medical intensive care unit. This is the first death in Mumbai due to leptospirosis this year. Khan who was H1N1 positive, had already been found to have diabetes and acute respiratory distress syndrome.

She was admitted to the hospital on July 8th and a test confirmed that she had leptospirosis, a bacterial infection that spreads through the urine of infected animals. Her symptoms included breathlessness and fever. A committee will inquire into the role of the double infection in her death. Door-to-door surveys will be conducted to screen patients for symptoms of both diseases at the transit camp Khan was staying at.
