800 colleges to be shut down by 2018

Following minimal admissions over the past five years, AICTCE ( All India Council for Technical Education) has instructed the colleges to close down by 2018, the council has also asked the colleges to submit a report by September. AICTCE officials have however given the option of merging with nearby colleges.
The decision was taken after the council had been studying student intake for last five year. Tamil Nadu has a total of 1300 engineering colleges with Maharashtra leading the lot with over 1500 colleges. Of 37 lakh engineering seats, its been told that more than 27 lakh seats are still lying vacant.
