Marking Hindi Diwas today, Union Home Minister pitched Hindi as the one language that can become India's most commonly spoken 'desi' language. In what has come to be termed as a mission to impose 'One nation, one language' ideology, the BJP leader said that Hindi should become the identity of India for the world.

Diversity of languages and dialects is the strength of our nation. But there is a need for our nation to have one language so that foreign languages don't find a place. This is why our freedom fighters envisioned Hindi as 'Raj bhasha', Shah said at an event.

Is Shah right? He has unnecessarily sparked a row. His comments will be seen as a ploy of the Modi government to impose Hindi on south Indian States. Shah is not ordinary. He is the second most powerful man in the country, says a commentator.
