HBD to The Ever Alluring Anjali

In modern cinema there has never been a better portrayal of the every day Tamil girl in her many shades, than the ones played by Anjali who has the distinction of starring in more films that are celebrated as cult classics. On her birthday today we take a look at some of those characters that Anjali breathed life into to make them memorable.

'Kattradhu Tamizh' - Anandhi

If Ram made his mark as an intense filmmaker and Jiiva further substantiated his image as a sold actor, it is Anjali who will linger in the minds of viewers for her brilliant portrayal of a lower middle class girl Anandhi. Her haunting eyes made words redundant as she expressed love, pain and tragedy through them.

'Angadi Theru' - Kani

That Telugu girl Anjali nailed the Nellai slang to perfection is itself proof for her dedication to her craft. As Kani she brought such zest to her character in the entire movie that Vasanthabalan did not have to worry about his debutante hero who just went through the motions.

'Engeyum Eppodhum' - Manimegalai

Bold women in Tamil cinema have been always been written as shrews and most of them ended up being disliked by the audiences. Anjali like a breath of fresh air lived the role of Manimeghalai who dominated her male partner but with her womanhood intact making her one more unforgettable role or even role model.

'Kalakalappu' - Madhavi

Many will be surprised to find this film in this list but the fact remains that Sundar Cs 'Kalakalappu' evoked the most number of laughter in theaters in recent memory.Laugh riots always need a balancing element which used to be tragedy in the old days and glamour now. Just recall how Anjali is at home providing the oomph factor without bordering on crassness. Ivalunga Imsai Thaangamudiyala anybody?

'Iraivi' - Ponni

Karthick Subbaraj's ill-fated tribute to women had Anjali as a woman in a shell who suffers at the hands of her insensitive husband who even contemplates an affair with another man but gives it all up for her child. Anjali maintains a frozen expression throughout to portray Ponni and only lights up in a few moments and one such moment is when Bobby Simha proposes to her. Such intricate acting ability is a gift which Anjali owns.

What next for Anjali?

Looks like Anjali's future is secured cozily as far as private life is concerned as Jai seems to be very much in it. Professionally she has Ram's 'Peranbu' with Mammootty, 'Balloon' with Jai and a heroine driven movie. We wish Anjali the happiest of birthdays and many more glorious years to follow in which she should bring more powerful women to life on celluloid.
