A one and a half year old boy, Devansh Suraj Dhansi, fell into an open drain on Wednesday night. The incident was caught on camera and took place at Ambedkar Chowk on Goregaon Mulund Link Road in Goregaon (East). The boy can be seen walking behind an electrical enclosure box and then falling into the gutter. Officials suggest that the tragic incident was reported at 10:24 pm.

The boy’s parents live near the drain. They had seen his slipper near the gutter and realized he may have fallen inside. A search operation is underway, but the toddler has not been spotted yet. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, police and fire brigade have been searching for the child. It is possible that he was swept to the nearby drain. Social activist Shravan Tiwari said: “Till 1.20am, locals and officials had checked four spots at Pravasi Chowk, Ambedkar Chowk, St Thomas High School and Goptewadi but couldn’t find him.”

Suraj, the boy’s father was devastated. He said: “The BMC corporators are responsible for this entire incident. To add to my distress, they launched the search only five to six hours after Divyansh fell into the gutter. Almost, as if my son slipping into a gutter is of no consequence. I will end my life if my son is not found.” In protest, the family members and locals blocked the road at night. The child was missing even after 18 hours.
