Filmmaker Gopi Nainar, known for directing the 2017 critically acclaimed film Aram starring Nayanthara, has announced that he is returning the Periyar Award, which was previously presented to him by the Dravidar Kazhagam.

In a statement on his X page, Gopi Nainar expressed concerns over being publicly vilified for advocating Dalit rights and opposing land excavations affecting marginalized communities. He accused Periyar thinkers and Dravidian ideologues of displaying a dictatorial mindset, stating that his democratic questioning of their policies has led to personal attacks and threats.

He further claimed that Tamil Nadu's socio-political climate suppresses Dalits who raise political concerns, adding that he fears for his life due to the hostility he has faced. Drawing parallels with attacks on intellectuals and activists across India, he suggested that his own fate might be no different.

Gopi Nainar pointed out the irony of the situation, stating that while Aram was celebrated for exposing government inaction towards the oppressed, his real-life activism has turned him into a target. Feeling humiliated by the Dravidar Kazhagam’s stance against him, he has chosen to return the award as a form of protest.

His decision has sparked discussions in political and cinema circles, drawing attention to the growing tensions between ideological movements and independent voices in Tamil Nadu.
