'Balakrishnudu', starring Nara Rohit, Ramya Krishna, Regina and Prudhvi in main roles, hits the screens on Nov 24. In this interview, director Pavan Mallela talks about the film, what is in store, and more.

Are you tensed before the release of 'Balakrishnudu'?

Yes, I am. Firstly, the producers are my friends. Secondly, this is my first movie. For many of us, this is new. That's why we are tensed.

What is your background? At the audio release function, it was said that you had gone back to your hometown and came back to direct this movie only at the insistence of your producer. How did films happen to you?

I was born and brought up in Vijayawada. I did my Engineering in Chennai. Later on, I did a film course in Australia. I like films a lot. It's a limitless world. That's why I have chosen this as a career option.

Why have you chosen an out-and-out commercial movie for your debut?

I had penned a love story to begin with. I couldn't make it happen despite living with it for 4 years. It's then that I ventured out to write the story of 'Balakrishnudu'.

What is the premise of the film?

The story starts taking place in 2006 in faction backdrop. The heroine's 'Menattha' lets the girl live in Hyderabad for her safety. When the hero brings her back to her village, the film unfolds as a road journey story in a span of one day.

Nara Rohit has said that the title has been so chosen because it sounds instantly commercial. What is your take?

The title is because the hero is seen pulling others legs and he is naughty. The comedy track involving him and Rohit is quite cool.

The film is quite fun-filled.

Why did you ask your hero to come down in weight?

It's not for the sake of six pack abs as many are assuming. I had approached Rohit when he was doing 'Savithri'. At that time, he was quite weighty. So, I asked him to shed weight so that it would be easier to do fights and dances.

What about the romantic track?

Even though this is the third movie that Rohit and Regina Cassandra are doing, the romantic track will be quite fresh. Their chemistry is quite sizzling.

What made you rope in Ramya Krishna?

When it is Ramya Krishna garu who is playing a powerful Rayalaseema woman, there is no need to establish the character. When we narrated the story, she said immediately OK.

What are the other highlights?

Besides comedy, there is a lot on offer, especially Mani Sharma garu's music. He is quite perfect when it comes to giving the right tunes.

What is your upcoming movie?

As everybody says, I have a few stories ready. Everything will depend on the fate of this movie.
