A suo moto case has been filed against a family after they refused to stand up for the national anthem in a theatre in Bengaluru during the screening of Dhanush's Asuran on October 23.

A video of the group being taunted by Kannada actors Arun Gowda, B V Aishwarya, and a couple of others, for "disrespecting the nation," recently went viral on social media. Arun Gowda reportedly made extremely offensive remarks, including calling the group "Pakistani terrorists." "Not able to spare 52 seconds for the country, but you have the audacity to sit here and watch a three-hour movie? Are you Pakistani terrorists?" he asked them. "Our soldiers are fighting for us in Kashmir and you guys are sitting here and don't even stand for the national anthem. Get out of this place," another man said.

The Supreme Court, in January 2018, had announced that it was optional for cinema halls to play the national anthem before shows. "People do not need to stand up at a cinema hall to be perceived as patriotic," the court further added. However, the group has reportedly been charged under Section 3 of the Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act, 1971.
