Bengaluru, whose population is estimated to be 1.2 crore, has got not more than 400 Covid-19 cases. This is phenomenal. For perspective, Mumbai has got more than 45,000 cases, while Delhi has got 25,000 cases. Chennai has got more than 18,000 cases.

What has made Bengaluru such a success story? Dr. Devi Shetty, a reputed Bengaluru-based doctor, tells India Today that the city was ahead of the curve in taking pro-active steps by at least 2-3 weeks compared to others. "Also, unlike the hospitals in other cities, Bengaluru emptied a whole government hospital and readied 1000 beds for Covid-19 patients. It didn't mix up coronavirus patients with non-coronavirus patients. Others did it and compounded the problem," Dr. Shetty said.

He added that even if the number of cases goes up in the city in the future, Bengaluru will be in a position to fight. "Infrastructure has already been readied to cater to patients should the numbers spike. The mortality rate has been low," Dr. Shetty added.

"Private hospitals were asked to be on a stand-by. But not a single patient was sent to us, as the government hospitals have been able to cater to all cases. Karnataka is in a much better position than other States, with 800,000 beds already ready to cater to increased demand in the future," Dr. Shetty revealed.

The doctor said that Karnataka has been testing higher than other States per day. Testing is quite important in the fight against Covid-19.
