BEST VILLAINS OF 2017
The best of heroes are made because they have to fight the best of the villains and this year we had many memorable bad guys right from heroine Sshvidha to comedian Kumaravelu to director S.J. Suriya. With such antagonism from diverse group of actors lets not waste any more time and get on with the slide show.
Sshvidha - Athey Kangal
At the very beginning of the year Kollywood got one of the best villainic performances and that too from a female actor Sshvidha who nailed the ruthless criminal con woman to perfection. Watch out for the cool manner in which she drives a pen into her sidekick or fight like a tigress with hero Kalai in the climax.
Arvind Swamy - Bogan
Beginning from where he left in 'Thani Oruvan', Arvind Swamy brought to life a near mythical villain. Goosebumps raise when one thinks of his swag, delight in wining and womanizing and enjoying a bad deed to the fullest. Aaditya Manivarman is definitely a great follow up to the unforgettable Siddharth Abhimanyu.
Parthiban - Koditta Idangalai Nirappuga
Villains come in many forms and in 'KIN' Parthiban with clinical perfection plays an underling who dupes an innocent millionaire preying on his weaknesses to relieve him of a large sum of money. Vintage stuff.
Bharath - Kadugu
Even director Rajakumaran would agree that his limitations as an actor was well balanced by having Bharath as the villain that too one who stoops to the level of letting a child be destroyed. The 'Kadal' hero deserves praise for accepting such a role and playing it without compromise.
Sulile Kumar - Dora
The relatively unknown actor Sulile Kumar was so perfect as the North Indian child abuser and murderer that one can say he almost stole the show from Lady Superstar herself in the climax.
Rana Daggubatti - Baahubali 2
The towering screen presence of Rana is enough to convince the viewer of his role as an ancient evil prince and its a sheer delight to watch him do all the villainy in a subtle fashion and then transform into an animal in the war sequences.
Anand Sami - Lens
The minimalist film 'Lens' tackled a relevant issue and Anand Sami scored big as the antagonist who holds the seemingly innocent lead character hostage for several hours. In such single room dramas only if the acting is good the story will touch the audiences and that is just what this one did.
Kumara Velu - Kurangu Bommai
The brilliant trained actor Kumaravelu proved his caliber once more in this out and out role of a heartless murderer and that too without for one iota of a second reminding us that he has only done comedy till now.
S.J. Suriya - Mersal and Spyder
Director S.J.Suriya fresh from his riveting performance as an alcoholic filmmaker in 'Iraivi', took on the role of the psychopathic grave keeper Sudalai in 'Spyder' which had fans go gaga at him. He followed it up with another great turn in 'Mersal' this time donning the role of a conventional masala villain with stylish ease.
Vinay - Thupparivaalan
As the leader of the samurai like assassins, Vinay put in an intense performance arguably the best in the film and his own scene is when he uses an electric saw to shred a dead body to pieces and enjoying his coffee during breaks drenched in blood.
Abhimanyu Singh - Theeran Adhigaram Ondru
The real life adaptation of a cop story 'Theeran Adhigaram Ondru' Abhimanyu Singh straight away struck terror in the hearts of the audiences as the gang leader of highway dacoits whose eyes only see the humans he kills as a means to his meals.
Varalakshmi Sarathkumar - Sathya
Varu suited the role of the Commissioner of Police with her physique and then in the end is very convincing as the baddie who does not hesitate to kill just to hold on to an abducted girl she takes as her daughter.
Fahadh Fazil - Velaikkaran
There are two types of villains one the loud and haughty who is easy to play as he is one dimensional while the other needs a great actor to nail it as it warrants subtlety. Fahadh makes a great entry in Tamil as the cool sauve villain who camouflages his evilness well.
