Illayaraja, back to his elements
Saturday, June 20, 2009 • Malayalam Comments

Among the quite few films that came out from Illayaraja in Malayalam in the last few years, there was no exceptional music, to talk about. Almost all the songs of his recent films like SMS and `Innathe Chintahvishayam' just gave a feel of revamped, repetitive tracks with that characteristic orchestration of the master composer. But the new audio release `Bhagyadevatha' definitely have at least a couple of songs, that stay out from being regulars. This three track sound track of the movie is definitely a worthy hear for all the regular Illayaraja fans.

1. Thira Thallippoyalum

Singer - Karthik

Rendered delightfully by Karthik, the songs offer that rustic   nostalgia of a village song. The song has some good lyrics by Vayalar Sharth which is adorned by uncomplicated and appropriate backgrounds. The pace and rendering give an air of that "Chenddakkoru" song from that Illayaraja movie `Manassinakkare'.

2.  Swapanangal Kannaezhuthiya

Singer - Chitra and Rahul Nambiar

This is another characteristic romantic duet sung by   Chitra and Rahul Nambiar. Though the music arrangements are nothing unique, yet there are some novelty in the track. This soft slow song shows striking resemblance to many raja songs in Tamil like "Anandha Vellathile" from Aagaya Thaamaraigal'.

3. Allippove

Singer - Swetha and Vijay Yesudas

Allippoove Mallippoove is equipped with Raja's techno background scores. But the maestro cannot take away that dejavu feel reminding his big hit `Sendhoorappoove'

Altogether, Bhagyadevatha passes muster in the listening test, though the album is not much remarkable.
