BJP goes into ‘thinking mode’ after losses in UP, Bihar Lok Sabha by-polls

The ‘think tank’ of the ruling BJP at the Centre went into a ‘brainstorming session’ (albeit unofficially) soon after the results of the recently held Lok Sabha by-polls (2 seats each in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar) were out yesterday evening.

The BJP drew a blank by losing all the three Lok Sabha seats, including the seat held by its Uttar Pradesh chief-minister Yogi Adityanath before he became chief-minister last year. The chief-minister, however, played down the impact of the by-poll result.

While Mulayalam Singh Yadav’s Samajwadi Party (SP) defeated the BJP in Gorakhpur and Phulpur in association with Mayawati’s Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP).  The margin of victory gave a clear indication that people might have ‘closed’ the door on the BJP while welcoming the unlikely alliance of Mayawati’s BSP and Mulayam’s SP. Congress lost its deposit in Gorakhpur.

RJD retained the Araria Lok Sabha constituency in Bihar, defeating the BJP candidate in a first trial of strength after Nitish Kumar ditched the RJD and the Congress and forged hands with the BJP to retain his Govt. last year. In Bihar, BJP could win only from Babua Assembly constituency as JD(U) candidate lost to RJD’s Sujoy Yadav at Jehanabad.

Congress president Rahul Gandhi pointed out that the by-poll reverses established the fact clearly that people are ‘angry’ with the BJP-led Centre. He also added that the Congress would take ‘extreme’ steps to strengthen the party in the State.  West Bengal chief-minister and Trinamool Congress president Mamata Banerjee said that the by-poll results might have signaled the ‘beginning’ of the end of the BJP in the country.
