The state has been witnessing a rise in upheavals and protests following the sad demise of Anitha, who ended her life over NEET (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test).

The issue saw support from eminent personalities including leading politicians, actors and activists for the need to remove NEET. Joining the bandwagon against NEET was actor Suriya who celebrated the end of two decades in his film career recently.

"There prevails a case of modern untouchability in the examination and education system in general. Only by migrating the education system from the concurrent lists to the state lists could such disheartening incidents like Anitha's demise be averted," the actor said.

However, the state president of the Bharatiya Janata Party, Tamilisai Soundararajan refuted the actor's opinions questioning his credentials. "How could Suriya who is an actor know wholly about the NEET examinations which is for people belonging to the medical profession? We worked in the streets when people like Suriya were working to earn crores," she said. She also opined that NEET had brought equality to students of all classes and backgrounds.

However, fans of the actor have taken it to social media platforms to show their support for their star.
