A formulistic kind of movie, ‘Bobby’ might come in the grab of ‘unconventional’; considering the lead heroine having a considerable upper age than her counterpart. However, it does not challenge any existing ‘norms’ or make a mark as a thoughtful movie. It does entertain to an extend with its love angle and post marriage upheavals. It is an okay kind of movie and one can go with the flow including the downsides without too much of a thought.
‘Bobby’ is all about a boy in love with a girl and his wooing. Bobby (Niranj – Maniyanpilla Raju’s son) is back from the seminary, having realised he is not cut out for a priestly life. He falls for Maria ((Miya George)after a series of fluffy romantic notions), an ex bank employee, not realizing that she is seven years his senior. The girl has her reasons to accept the proposal and hardly a few weeks pass when they are married. The marriage is not born out of love, but adjustment (and retribution on her ex) on the part of Maria. The aftermath is what the movie stretches out.
Directed by Shebi Chowgath, ‘Bobby’ is apt for the title romantic entertainer. There is the balance of cheesiness and seriousness all mixed up. Maria is portrayed as a no nonsense kind of girl, all of 28 years old. But then, this character’s sudden change of heart at the end does not gel with the characterization. There is humour aplenty. Some of them does fall flat, especially those track ones which does not add anything to the movie. But some by Sudheer Karamana, Pashanam Shaji and team all evoke a chuckle or two. Just when we think things are slipping, the movie catches you unawares. This roller coaster ride lasts throughout.
Niranj has the potential to making a lasting run. He does romance and comic sequences with a unique flair. There are some mannerisms of his father. As the love struck Bobby he does make a mark. Miay is at ease playing Maria. The serious girl sorting out her issues comes off well and Miya makes things look natural. Sudheer Karama has some good witty sequences which he pulls off brilliantly. Other minor characters all add to the movie including the comic brigade.
The tone of the movie is colourful and the camera and edits capture the intended feel. From Johnson master’s music to lake side views it is an all out romcom feel. Songs and bgm are passably good. Script needs to have been better edited. The change of heart needs to have been given a stronger reason. Characterization could have been better done with more detailing and depth. Direction is good enough.
‘Bobby’ is a good enough one time watch and joins with aplomb, the list of those passive rom com entertainers.
