The Rajya Sabha passes Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill, 2019, better known as the Triple Talaq Bill, was on Tuesday evening passed by the Rajya Sabha. After the President of India gives his assent, it will become a law.

Union Minister of Law & Justice Ravi Shankar Prasad hailed the passing of the Bill as a historic development. "Both the Houses have given justice to Muslim women. This is the beginning of a transforming India," he said.

BJP's Sambit Patra said, "From Shah Bano to Shaira Bano is not merely a legal journey but a giant leap for womenkind. Upholding their right to decent living, equality and non-discrimination! Triple Talaq at one go has finally been criminalized, thanks to the PM Ji and all those who fought for it!"

Raj Babbar of the Congress said that it's a historic mistake to have made a civil law into a criminal law.
