CAB row: India regrets USCIRF's statement

The Ministry of External Affairs has expressed regret over the US Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) making a statement against India on the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill passed in Lok Sabha. The USCIRF suggested that those involved in framing the Bill should be prevented from entering the US.

Taking note of the objectionable tone of the threat, the MEA today said that the statement made by USCIRF is neither accurate nor warranted. The Citizenship (Amendment) Bill provides expedited consideration for Indian citizenship to persecuted religious minorities already in India from certain contiguous countries. It seeks to address their current difficulties and meet their basic human rights, the MEA said.

Meanwhile, Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan has made some inconsequential noise on the CAB. We strongly condemn Indian Lok Sabha citizenship legislation which violates all norms of int human rights law & bilateral agreements with Pak. It is part of the RSS Hindu Rashtra design of expansionism propagated by the fascist Modi Govt, he tweeted out.
