Case filed with SC to beam SC’s proceedings live on TV

A case has been filed with the Supreme Court of India requesting for live broadcast of the Supreme Court’s proceedings, similar to the one being done in case of Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha.

Separate television channels are in place to beam live the proceedings in the Upper House (Rajya Sabha) and the Lower House (Lok Sabha) of Parliament. On days when the Parliament is not in session, these channels continue to relay programmes of past interviews of those lawmakers.

Former additional solicitor-general of India and senior counsel Indira Jaisingh has moved the Supreme Court by filing a public interest litigation petition seeking live broadcast of Supreme Court’s proceedings. She cited the live broadcast of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha proceedings on television channels and asked the apex Court to order for live broadcast of Supreme Court’s proceedings as well.

A Bench comprising Chief Justice of India Dipak Mistra took up the petition and ruled that the proceedings of not all the cases can be beamed live on television.

“Proceedings or trial of only those cases involving Constituion Bench of the apex Court and cases of national significance can be broadcast live,” it said and directed Attorney General K.K. Venugopal to get the Centre’s views in this regard and report back to the Court.
