The Supreme Court  pronounced the verdict in the decades long Cauvery row and according to it 177.25 tmc(thousand million cubic feet) water will be released to Tamil Nadu. So the water share of TN has been reduced from 192 tmc to 177 tmc while Karnataka gets 14.75 tmc as an additional allocation. It should noted that TN had asked for 264 tmcft of water.

The verdict will remain in force for 15 years and also the SC has decided to set up Cauvery Water Board to monitor allocation of water to the concerned states.

The Supreme Court has also allocated 4.75 tmc to Bengaluru for drinking purposes.  Karnataka's CM Siddaramaiah has stated that he will give his opinion on the verdict after consulting with lawyers. It has been a day of high voltage anticipation for the people of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka as the Supreme Court announces the verdict over the Cauvery issue today. The tussle between the states is a 120 years long affair and both states have police force on standby in case of a unfavourable verdict.

The SC bench which gave judgement comprises of Chief Justice Deepak Mishra, Justices Amitabh Roy and AM Khanwilkar. Last year Tamil Nadu has asked the apex court for a fundamental change in the water sharing pact demanding also the setting up of Cauvery Management Board.

Karnataka however had stated the demands set forth by TN to be unfair. It is also worth mentioning here that the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal determined the total availability of water in 2007 to be 740 tmcft at lower Coleroon Anicut which was challenged by both the states.

Cauvery is the lifeline to Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka and Puducherry and the verdict is definitely going to have political repurcussions according to experts.
