In commemoration of MG Ramachandran's 100th birth centenary, the central government has planned to issue coins of denomination Rs.100 and Rs.5 in honour of the late AIADMK forebearer and former chief minister of Tamil Nadu.

The coins will have the portrait of the great leader etched on it with  'Dr MG Ramachandran Birth Centenary' inscribed in the Devanagari script. The other side of the coin will have engraved the Lion Capital of Ashoka Pillar in its centre.

Fondly referred to as MGR, he not only mesmerised people with his acting but also made a great impact on Tamil Nadu's political structure by founding the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) and thereafter getting elected thrice as the chief minister for the state.

The announcement by the Ministry of Finance will warm the hearts of Tamil people who still revere MGR to be their cultural and political icon long after the legend's passing.
