Recently, when the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi had been to Chennai ahead of the Lok Sabha elections, had paid tribute to former Tamil Nadu chief minister MG Ramachandran, and had announced that the name of Chennai Central Railway Station will be changed, and will be named after him.

While this announcement was made in March, the latest development is that, the Tamil Nadu government has given a notification, conveying the detail that the ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India has provided the "No Objection" for changing the name of Central Railway station.

As per the Tamil Nadu government gazette notification dated April 5, 2019, Central Railway station will be rechristened to Puratchi Thalaivar Dr.M.G. Ramachandran central railway station. It must be noted that the DMK party had also been demanding the change of Egmore Railway station's name after Kalaignar Karunanidhi.
