CIC denies reply to RTI query on PM’s promise of Rs.15 lakh payment to all

The Central Information Commission (CIC) has denied reply to a specific query under the Right To Information (RTI) Act, 2005 on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s reported promise to ‘deposit Rs.15 lakhs’ into the bank accounts of all citizens.

While campaigning for the BJP prior to the 2014 Lok Sabha polls as its star campaigner, the then Gujarat chief-minister Narendra Modi (who was the BJP-led NDA’s prime-ministerial candidate) had told at various meetings that if the BJP won the polls, it would take efforts to unearth black money and would deposit Rs.15 lakhs each into the accounts of all Indian citizens.

As it turned out, the BJP won the polls riding on a ‘Modi wave’ and despite completing four years of his tenure, Prime Minister Narendra Modi hasn’t yet deposited Rs.15 lakhs into even a single citizen’s bank account.  Mohan Kumar of New Delhi had filed an RTI query on 16th November, 2016 asking the CIC to explain why the Prime Minister has’t kept his word of depositing Rs.15 lakhs into the citizens’ bank accounts.

Sending a reply to Mohan Kumar after almost one-and-a-half years, the CIC has stated that the information sought by the RTI applicant didn’t fall under the ‘category’ envisaged as information.  Speaking to newsmen later, Mohan Kumar said that the CIC and the Centre had cheated him by giving an evasive reply.
