Malayalam cinema has often explored the lives of Communist comrades, but Tamil cinema has generally avoided delving deeply into Communist movements or the suppression and conspiracy cases faced by Communist leaders. However, the life of poet Kaliaperumal was brought to the screen through Vetri Maaran’s film "Viduthalai," which received appreciation from Tamil audiences.
Following Vijay Sethupathi's portrayal, actor Samuthirakani now plays a Communist leader in the upcoming film "Veera Vanakkam." The movie presents the historical journey of how he shifted from the Congress movement to Communism. Directed by renowned Malayalam filmmaker Anil V. Nagendran, the movie aims to strengthen the bond between Tamil Nadu and Kerala.
The film features Bharath alongside Samuthirakani for the first time. The cast includes National Award-winning actress Surabhi Lakshmi, along with Ritheesh, Bharani, Ramesh Pisharody, Siddique, and over 2,000 actors. The film highlights the revolutionary life of P. Krishna Pillai, the founder of the Communist Party in Kerala, and captures the socio-political struggles of a Tamil village.
Veteran revolutionary singer and freedom fighter P.K. Medhini, aged 95, plays a crucial role in the film. "Veera Vanakkam" is a sequel to Anil V. Nagendran’s Malayalam blockbuster "Vasanthathinte Kanal Vazhikalil."
The film’s music is composed by M.K. Arjunan, Perumbavoor G. Ravindranath, James Vasanthan, C.J. Kuttappan, and Anchal Udayakumar. T.M.S. Selvakumar, son of legendary singer T.M. Soundararajan, debuts as a playback singer. Additionally, vocalist Yasin Nisar, folk singer C.J. Kuttappan, Ravi Shankar, and Sonia have contributed songs.
With a strong premise and historical significance, it remains to be seen whether "Veera Vanakkam" will surpass "Viduthalai" in capturing historical narratives.
