Congress petitions V-P for impeachment motion against CJI Dipak Misra

The Congress Party has petitioned Vice-President Venkaiah Naidu, who is the ex-officio chairman of the Rajya Sabha, to move an impeachment motion in the Upper House of Parliament to terminate Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra.

Ghulam Nabi Azad, Congress’ floor leader in the Rajya Sabha, led leaders of seven parties to meet Venkaiah Naidu yesterday submitting a memorandum containing signatures of 67 MPs demanding impeachment of Chief Justice Dipak Misra.

The meeting of Congress and other party leaders at the Vice-President’s official residence was intended to press for moving an impeachment motion in the Rajya Sabha to remove the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of India who has gotten himself into more controversies of late.  The demand comes amid the CJI ordering that there was no need for a special inquiry into the demise of CBI Court Justice Loya.

BJP president Amit Shah was one of the accused in the case of the (in) famous ‘Sorafudeen encounter’ which was supervised by (late) Justice Loya who passed away in December, 2014 of cardiac arrest.  A judge appointed in his place acquitted Shah from the case, which was termed by the Congress as the ‘saddest’ day in Indian judiciary.

Besides Congress, other party MPs who have signed the request for impeaching the CJI include CPI, CPI-M, NCP and RJD.
