The Madras High court has turned down a plea by Siddharth, who wanted film actors to be treated on par with drama/folk artists and given tax cuts.

The first bench comprising Chief Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Justice M M Sundresh said, "The mere fact that there is an element of drama or acting both in case of theatre and films does not mean that the two activities are identical."

In his plea, Siddharth said the (tax) notification (by the government) was discriminatory and violative of Arts 14 and 19 of the Constitution.

"MY job involved displaying various emotions, dialogue delivery and acting. These skills are not different from those of a theatre or drama artiste," he said, requesting tax exemption.

Rejecting his plea, the High Court asked Siddharth whether he would perform at rates theatre artistes performed.
