Several incidents of self-proclaimed cow vigilantes beating up people on false news that beef was consumed or traded have been on the rise. The latest incident happened in Nagpur where a 36-year-old Muslim man was assaulted by four men for carrying goat meat which the attackers assumed was beef.

Police have arrested all four attackers. The victim, Ismail Shah, has been hospitalized. During the attack, he said that he repeatedly told the men that he was not carrying cow meat.

The Maharashtra government plans to give meat-testing kits to enable officers to test meat on-the-spot, in a bid to bring down cow vigilantism.
